Child abuse royal commission: Justice McClellan warns churches to change or risk illegitimacy

Every major Australian church has been cautioned to better protect children or risk illegitimacy. In a speech to the National Council of Churches, the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse chairman Justice Peter McClellan urged religious leaders to act on his recommendations.

National child sex abuse redress scheme gets Budget allocation
The Federal Budget has allocated $33.4 million to the setting up of the national redress scheme for survivors of institutional child sexual abuse. Supporters of the scheme have welcomed the funding and are urging the states, churches and charities to opt-in to the scheme.

Parents urged to hold children close as figures show childhood trauma leads to adult mental health issues
A leading mental health advocate has urged parents to provide a safe environment for their children, from birth, to prevent later life impacts, after new figures were released showing up to 88 per cent of adult survivors of childhood trauma develop mental health problems.

Why are we further traumatising our abused youth?
The brutalisation of youth in the Northern Territory's Don Dale Detention Centre has shocked Australians. The footage of degrading physical violations and extreme punishments by the prison officers was reminiscent of the torture and dehumanising abuse of prisoners at the notorious Abu Ghraib prison, images of which sparked global outrage in 2003.
