Workshop for supporters

Trauma from childhood including all forms of abuse, neglect, and other adverse childhood experiences is common and can have substantial impacts both for the adult who has experienced it as well as people around him/her. Supporting a person who has experienced childhood trauma or abuse is rewarding but can be challenging as well. Learning about using a trauma-informed approach to interpersonal communication and relationships can reduce the likelihood of experiencing unintended difficult and unsettling interactions. In this full day, workshop participants will learn about becoming more trauma informed and the positive impact a trauma informed approach can have on their interactions with partners, friends, family members and/or loved ones who are adult survivors of childhood trauma and/or abuse. They will also acquire knowledge about how stress affects children as they develop, and how that biological response can still affect people later in life, including what may trigger them and how. Participants will also be given strategies to help them understand and support survivors on their recovery journey while paying attention to their own self-care.

By attending this workshop participants will

  • Understand trauma, the stress response, the impacts of trauma on the brain, the ways survivors cope, their strengths and challenges
  • Learn the core principles of a trauma-informed approach, what it involves, how it can help and why
  • Acquire the skills to implement trauma-informed principles into their daily interactions with the survivor/s in their life and build healthy relationships
  • Understand that recovery is possible, how and where to find support for themselves and the survivor in the lives
  • Develop strategies for self-care

All Blue Knot Foundation training and education is grounded in the latest research presented in our Practice Guidelines for Treatment of Complex Trauma and Trauma Informed Care and Service Delivery and other relevant research.

Who should attend?
