Working with Intergenerational and Collective Trauma- fostering healing and building resilience

Historical Trauma

This one-day interactive professional development training, informed by current research, provides the information, understanding and skills needed by people working in any health or human service role. It explores the often substantial compounded impacts of diverse traumas on individuals, whole populations and communities, including across generations.

By attending this training, participants will better understand the complexities of intergenerational, collective and historical trauma, particularly in the Australian context with its history of colonisation, marginalisation and cumulative trauma. The training will explore the mechanisms in which trauma is transmitted across and between generations and pathways to healing and resilience.

There will be lots of opportunities for interactive exercises and reflection within the training, so that learners can apply their learning in their daily life, including their work role.

The concept of collective impact will be used together with trauma-informed principles to workshop community-based strategies to make a difference in addressing historical trauma.

This training equips anyone working with people impacted by historical and intergenerational trauma to build on a compassionate and nuanced understanding of the challenges faced by particular groups in Australian society.

By participating in this professional development training, participants will:

1.      Gain an understanding of historical, collective and intergenerational trauma in the Australian context

2.      Articulate the dimensions of impact, mechanisms of intergenerational transmission, risks and protective factors, and the role of attachment

3.      Define and articulate strategies to foster resilience and healing, using trauma informed care principles

4.      Using the concept of collective impact and trauma informed care principles, workshop strategies to design a pathway forward

Material presented in the training will draw on research including from Blue Knot Foundation's Practice Guidelines for Treatment of Complex Trauma and Trauma Informed Care and Service Delivery and other relevant research.

Who should attend?

This training will suit all staff who work with, or manage services for, people who may have experienced historical, collective and intergenerational trauma. This includes service managers, therapists, case workers, counsellors, social workers, psychologists, community, mental health and peer workers, primary care practitioners, policy makers, program managers and other professionals.
