Working with Psychosis and Trauma - Masterclass

Three-phased image

This Masterclass is delivered by 2017 Mental Health Nurse of the Year, Matt Ball; Matt is renowned for his trauma-informed approach to working with people who experience psychosis or altered states.

This one-day experiential masterclass will explore the relationship between psychosis – including hearing voices, visions, paranoia and other unusual realities - and cumulative traumatic experiences that may have preceded the experience of psychosis.

This professional development training will provide the knowledge and skills to utilise a trauma-informed practice approach, to enhance personal recovery across all domains of a person’s daily life. It will foster creative, trauma-informed relational approaches in supporting clients to make sense of and overcome the impact of psychosis. These include somatic and psychotherapeutic approaches, as well as the three phased approach.

By participating in this professional development training, attendees will:

  • Utilise knowledge of relationship between childhood trauma and psychosis to articulate the benefits of trauma-informed practice approach in working therapeutically with individuals experiencing psychosis.
  • Acquire skills in both relating and working with individuals experiencing psychosis, including applying the three-phased approach, and the use of recognised somatic and psychological approaches to working with trauma
  • Delineate a potentially dissociative reality as opposed to a psychotic reality
  • Apply an understanding of metaphor and meaning in developing a collaborative formulation of the persons experiences, and in planning the personal recovery from psychotic experiences.

Material presented in the training will draw on research from Blue Knot Foundation's Practice Guidelines for Treatment of Complex Trauma and Trauma Informed Care and Service Delivery and other relevant research.
